Contributing Artists of Rapandar 2009

AWADI:

Awadi is without contest the most visible African francophone rap artist. Award winner at the RFI Musique du Monde in 2003, he is the pioneer of a musical genre which has gained significant influence in recent years in Africa and world wide. With his group, Positive Black Soul, he has released several albums of artistic merit and opened in both Europe and the United States. Both an artist and an entrepreneur (he is a producer, radio and tv MC, owner of a music studio, music label, as well as a sound production and security company) Didier Awadi is the best example of this generation that creates, understands and uses state of the art technology as well as appreciates the cultural assets of his longstanding traditions. In all, he continues to create music with its roots in tradition carrying a message for the conscious of today.

XUMAN

Gunman Xuman, born Makhtar Fall is one of the pioneers of Senegalese rap music. He started his career in the 1990?s with the group Pee Froiss which was composed of:

Bibson (now gone solo)

Sister Joice

Souley (ex member of Jant Bi, now gone solo)

Aladji Man (member of Daara J)

Kool Kocc 6

Gee Bayss (DJ)

Now Pee Froiss is composed of only Kool Kocc, Gee Bayss and most certainly Xuman. He was born in the Ivory Coast, but grew up in Senegal. He started writing lyrics in the up and coming FASS district. His manner of writing allowed him to form amiable ties with Positive Black Soul early on. He has performed in many festivals around Senegal and continues to engage his fans with relevant lyrics about society, politics and denouncing the negative role the West has had on Africa.

Pression I Legal

Pression I Legal is, at its core, a musical collision between Lille and Roubaix. The group Production I Legal joined the music scene in Roubaix, France in 2002 with several successful concerts. The ensemble had some successful mixes and was slowly becoming known in France. Alas, the group was hit by tragedy when Sly was diagnosed and died of cancer in 2006. It was at this time the group joined with Coup 2 Pression to produce a totally fresh sound. Together, Pression I Legal writes lyrics that touch the conscience and soul.

Their latest album ?Une Cravatte Colombienne? was released in September 2008.

Axiom, whose real name is Hicham, was born in Lille, France, but his family originates from Morocco. He was born in the Moulin-Belfort neighborhood composed mostly of working immigrants. Axiom went on to invent ?Bledkick? a combination of urban and ethnic rhythms. We can already imagine that he will continue to grow his loyal fan base.

The group was formed in 1998 and is considered one of the most active in Senegal whose powerful lyrics denounce the various ills of society. Keur Gui is preparing their latest album Nos ?Connes? Doleances.
